Medium

medium
noun

In artistic terms, a medium is what you create art with. It can be paint, graphite, pens, charcoal, an eraser, clay, etc.

Medium comes in six categories. The examples given may fit into more than one category, and are only a couple examples of the many tools for mark making.

1. Additive
An attitive medium is anything that you can run over the page multiple times to make the marks darker.

 * Graphite, charcoal

2. Subtractive
A subtractive medium is anything that you can run over the page to remove bits and make marks.

 * Eraser, scratch board

3. Fluid
A fluid medium is any medium that acts in a fluid manner.

 * Paints, ink

4. Linear
A linear medium makes marks that don't vary in width.

 * Micron pen, knife

5. Pressure Sensitive
A pressure sensitive medium changes the size or value of the marks based on pressure.

 * Marker, nib pen

6. Shape
A shape medium is anything that doesn't make lines, but instead makes shapes.

 * Stamp, cut-outs

Paper, or what is drawn on, is often called a substrate?, not a medium.
