How To

Basic Info

Your login information for this Wiki is the same as your Gimpystick login. Click Edit on any page to be asked to log in.

A basic formatting tutorial for the wiki can be found here: Basic Editing. Also, when editing there is a quick reference at the bottom of the page.

Site Layout

There are five sections on the Wiki:

  • Main
    • A sparse section that contains this page and the HomePage.
  • Tutorial
    • This is the place for art tutorials, also known as "methods and techniques." Find things like how to use Light Logic here.
  • Glossary
  • Reference
    • Some teachers, books, or websites, have more reliable information than others. Sources cited will be listed here, so if someone claims Abbott Smith says such-and-such we'll know how reliable that lesson is.
  • Profiles
    • Each of the users of Gimpystick can create their own profile pages. These will eventually be linked directly from Gimpystick proper.

In addition to these, there are two more sections worth note.

  • PmWiki
    • All of the built-in documentation for the wiki is here.
  • Category
    • Some related pages pages are found in different sections. By putting a category tag onto everything related to specific topics (muscles, bones, ink pens, whatever), then related topics can be found easier.

Creating Content

There are two ways to add content to the wiki: Edit a page, and create a page.

  • To edit a page, simply click on the "Edit" button in the upper right.
  • To create a page is a little more difficult. Let me give a few options for this.

First, type the page you want to create into your browser's address bar using WikiWords, also known as CamelCase. If you're logged in, you will be asked if you want to create it. Otherwise, you can click Edit to log in.

Second, you can use another page or the WikiSandbox to create a link to the non-existant page. You can then click the link and choose to edit the page.

The third way I haven't created yet.

The lists on the main page are automatically generated, so when creating a new page you need not worry about anything but creating the page and adding the content to it. It will automatically have a link to it after you've made it.

Please note: Trying to create something in a category other than Main, Tutorial, Glossary, Reference, or Profiles will result in a non-specific error message. Please only use the provided categories for better organization.

Organizing Content

Formatting

As of now, I have no assigned rubic for formatting the pages. I do ask that you do the following, though:

  • Avoid using "The" and other unnecessary words in the title. Notice the tutorial for Light Logic is not "How to Use Light Logic," but simply "Light Logic."

Categories

To add something to a category, type [[!Category]] at the bottom of the page it's on, where "Category" is the name of the category. If there's already a different category link on the page, just add another one after it.

The Vision

Once the wiki has a decent amount of content, I'm going to be replacing the index page with a much more comprehensive one. Instead of just a list of all the pages on the wiki, it will link to categories and have things like "Beginner," "Intermediate," and "Expert" tutorials.
