Explosion

This information on explosions was gleaned from Jazno Francoeur's class.

Generally, explosions have three parts.

1. The explosion cloud itself
2. "Ground projectiles" which are shards that shoot out on the ground where the explosion happened.
3. Air projectiles, which are like the ground smoke but fly out in different directions.

Also, approximately 1/3rd of the smoke should contain value to make it look shadowed. You'll have to experiment to figure out the best way to draw the shadows so they look convincing.

This is the best example of an explosion that I have on hand.

The air projectiles aren't very good because that middle one breaks arc. It wouldn't move like that if the others are moving like they are. The ground explosions are coming out the front door. They're hard to see. Essentially they're "air projectiles" but they can't move cleanly out, since the ground's in the way, so they skitter across the ground.
