Ok, I KNOW this isn't a sketch, but I really want input on the coloring. It took 4 days to color and it nearly drove me insain, not that I was ever sain to begin with. ;)
Yes... I am an extremely big Sonic the Hedgehog fan, as well as all the other Sonic related characters. (Cream the rabbit being one of my personal favorites)Anyways, One day I decided Vanilla (Cream's mother for those of you who don't know) doesn't get enough fan art. So I came up with this. Yeah, my mind is a strange place. |

I thought the heads looked very Sonic-y. The bodies most certainly are not. But I imagine you were going for a more realistic Sonic style, keeping the Sonic heads while making the rest more proportional. Then again, I don't follow Sonic very well, and have hardly played his games.
Things I really like:
-Emotion. The characters are doing something and they're happy about it. We've got a story going of the lizard being embarrassed but happy, the rabbit enjoying herself, and the kids loving it.
-Coloring. You did a great job on the coloring. The piece has a very soft and unified look, mostly high-key, because of how you did it. It's also unified because you stuck with very rounded shapes instead of angled and sharp things.
-Anatomy. The anatomy is pretty good, too. The proportions are fairly accurate, though Vanilla has very long legs (which is generally considered attractive, so it's ok).
The one thing I think would make this picture better is knowledge of simultaneous contrast.
I've done a writeup of it before, and I don't have very much time. So I'm going to link you to it, and mention a few things quickly. [url]
The theory is that if you put two similar colors/shapes/values together, the eye will see LESS difference between them then there really is. If you put dissimilar colors/shapes/values next to each other, the eye will see MORE difference between them then there really is.
One of the biggest advantages of using this is things like separating the image into "layers." Separating the background from the foreground, and separating overlapping limbs from each other. Things like that. Right now, Vanilla blends into the background A LOT. She's almost the same color as the sand. While the lizard uses much less luminent, saturated colors, which makes him really pop out.
Squint at the picture. The areas of highest contrast will pop out. You might hate the bag because it's one of the most contrasting parts in the picture. That means the eye is drawn to it.
So anyway, there's a few ways to fix the problem. You could simply make the areas of sand around the figures darker or lighter to make them stand out more (usually no one will really notice or care), or you could force a reason for that to happen. Shadows from a cloud, shadows from the figures, whatever you'd like to explain it away with.
I could talk about composition, too, but I don't have the time, sadly.
A quick note on anatomy: The deltoid (shoulder muscle) actually extends halfway down the arm. Since it tapers to a point and connects at the outside (lateral) side of the arm, you can't always SEE it do that. But it's important to know that's what it does.
A note on 3D forms: You have some things, like the lizard's snout and foot, which are essentially SIDE views tacked on to a forward view figure. The issue at hand is perspective. You can fix this by boxing out the shape, starting with geometric primitives, to make it look properly in 3D, and then add the details. Be careful when adding details not to flatten it out again. This is something I still struggle with regularly. |
