Gimpystick's Purpose [top]
The purpose of Gimpystick's existance is to help artists become better artists.

Gimpystick makes use of a few universal truths to accomplish this goal:

1) Practice makes perfect.
It sometimes takes months or even years of practice before one notices any improvement. But the more you practice, the faster you get better.

3) Tasks are easier and more fun when doing them with a friend.
Gimpystick is here to form a community where the people encourage each other and give each other a sense of responsibility to update. Those that need to can see it as a competition (I'll get more elements of competition in as I can). Those that just want a friend to draw with can get that, too.

b) Passion wanes.
Yes, we always start down the road to awesomeness with good intentions, but by the time we reach the first rest stop we're sweaty and thirsty and tired. Gimpystick is built so you can easily browse your old and new works and see just how much you have improved, to help you feel awesome when you're feeling down and out.

Gimpystick's Rules [top]
This is the code the Gimpystick artists live by to make the purpose of Gimpystick actually work.

1) Update daily.
Fastest way to get better.

2) Avoiding uploading more than once per day.
a) However, the midnight line is a little fuzzy. When I get scorekeeping in I'll allow a certain cushion of hours per week for uploading around midnight.
b) If you have more than one sketch you want to show for a day, edit them together so they're in one file, and upload that one file.

3) Only upload pictures that you've drawn that day.
That's called cheating!

4) Don't upload Art (capital A) pictures.
Only studies, sketches, doodles, and things you use to learn.

5) Avoid mature themes and nudity.
I don't want to have to filter the site for viewer age.

Gimpystick's Not Done [top]
Sadly, I'm all busy and stuff and can't update Gimpystick to the extent that I want. There are all kinds of neat and fun and entertaining features that would make Gimpystick twice as awesome and useful, but they have to wait until I have the spare time to actually make them.

Upcoming features:
• Gimpystick Showcase, for Art (capital A) and general audience eye candy.
• Scorekeeping. He who updates dailiest wins.
• Cookies! Someone took your advice? Give them a cookie!
• Scavenger Hunts. Draw everything on the list!
• Theme Months.

Note: "Deletion" is not a feature, and will not be implimented on Gimpystick.

Gimpystick's Boss [top]
I am Stickman, born July 20th, 1981. I spent a good portion of my life working with computers. I liked art, and while I drew something now and then it never turned out very good, so I never thought of doing that for a living.

After spending most of my life thinking I'd be a systems programmer or network administrator, I started up a webcomic. A year later, my art improved. Not much, but a noticable amount. It was absolutely shocking for me to realize that art isn't something you're magically born knowing how to do, but something that you can learn and develop as a skill, just like anything else.

I realized I loved art more than I loved computers, and my life took a completely different direction.

Since I'm always blowing things out of proportion, I made Gimpystick. Aren't you so glad I did?

Gimpystick's Origin [top]
It started when Gimpyboy approached me on July 19th, 2005 (at 7:12 pm) with the idea of improving our artist skills:

J: So I had an idea
J: And boy is it a doozy
Stickman: Do tell.
J: You know how one of your favorite things about comics is watching someones artistic ability improve?
Stickman: Ya?
J: Well the idea is, we set up another page, seperate from all your and my soon to be comics, and it will only be a doodle a day for both of us. Every day we post only one doodle. Only there are rules.
J: No cartoons.
J: Only life drawings.
J: Can be anatomical studies, architectural studies, life drawing people. Whatever
J: It just has to be something where we're trying to improve artistically rather than stylistically.
Stickman: I see.
J: And we just put em up there.
Stickman: Define "doodle"? I see doodle as lower than sketch.
J: A doodle is a sketch.
J: Basically I'm saying a drawing in pencil.
J: It doesn't even have to be complete.
J: Just pencil work where you're trying to get better. Or your doodle could be color studies.
J: Or Light studies.
J: But no finished works.
Stickman: Sounds fun.
J: Yeah I think it could be a blast. Plus it would show real improvement in all sorts of areas over time.

The next day, July 20th, 2005, my 24th birthday, Gimpystick was finished and put online.

The name "Gimpystick" comes from the first part of each of our names, Gimpyboy and Stickman, since it was originally designed just for the two of us. When Gimpyboy could no longer update, I improved the way it worked and opened registration to anyone that was interested. I tried changing the name once, but none of the members were interested.
