I drew a friend's dragon character. Roughly 10-15 minutes. The geometry was getting lost, so I tried to separate it with some value. |

Letsee... what do I like about this picture.
First of all, it looks good overall. I can tell what you drew, and it's got form and texture.
Second, like you said, you used value to encourage us to see the geometry. You did it on the horns, and especially under the fin on her cheek. That last one separates the head from the neck, and real shadow or not, it helps us understand the picture, which is the priority.
Third, the area of highest contrast is the eye, which is the most socially relevant part of the face. Always a good tactic. (To easily tell the darkest/lightest part of a picture, squint. Squinting is a very valid and extremely useful tool that every artist should use often.)
And lastly, you put some scales in, but didn't fill the whole thing up with scales. You've got enough for us to see what they are and make it relevant, but we naturally fill in the rest of the space with that same texture even though you didn't do it yourself. It keeps the picture clean while still giving it texture.
I'll make a suggestion on how to improve the picture, but it's not going to be something like "use the value-depth separation trick here" or "try this technique." It's gonna be related to the seven goals of drawing for animation.
The first goal is emotion. And while she's got this little smirk going on (which is great! The face doesn't look boring and fake), you could do a lot more than this. I also have a personal favorite of adding in little bits and pieces that create questions and end up making it a story of some kind. Make her grinning and add in her claw holding a snowball. Or make her terrified and flinching and show a snowball coming in. While the picture is awesome, doing something more would bring the picture to life. |

| Yeah, if we're talking Horizons, I definitely need to do one involving snowballs. :D |
