I tried that "looking from above" perspective. It didn't came out as obvious as I hoped, but I still think that in overall it came out nicely.
The water was cold though. |

So is he looking off a cliff, or lying down to drink from a stream? Whichever, the character looks pretty good. The detail on the shubberies and grass works pretty well, too.
If it's a cliff, small trees and such at the bottom, and perhaps "distance daze" would help encourage that. Maybe even the shadow of the cliff, if the sun is right (but it looks like it's going the other way).
In any case, in order to support himself his arms would be our further. The closer in your arms are, the harder it is to keep yourself pushed up. To illustrate the forearms in that position, you can have the shoulders and upper arm obscuring the forearm. |
