Downtime Around March 12th?

Comcast (my internet provider) is sending me emails about changing my connection to DHCP. Well… it is because that’s what it’s always been. However, in the past Comcast has always had “persistant” DHCP. That is, as long as you have the same Mac address and your old IP is still available, they would give you the same IP you had previously. This makes it easier to do things like host a website because your IP doesn’t change but once in a year, if that.

If Comcast changes their setup to be more dynamic and my IP starts changing every couple days I’m not going to be able to host this site out of my home anymore.

What does this mean to you? A day or two of downtime, depending on how quickly I move my stuff to a new server. Nothing serious. I’m going to try to get in contact with Comcast and see exactly what they’re planning and move my stuff earlier if I need to and minimize downtime. Not that they like to inform their customers, but you never know.
